はじめまして。アメリカから来た、日本に住んでるナイス外人「イアン」とのことです。
自己紹介としては平成 2年に生まれで現在までおおよそ 1年間日本に住んでいます。去年アメリカの大学を卒業し、今は日本の会社でアプリのプログラマーとして働いています。
趣味はナードコアという特殊なテクノ音楽で、時々 DJ などもしていますし、そういったイベントのオーガナイズもします。
またゲームが好きで、アニメもちょいちょい見ています。ドラゴンボールとかうる星やつらのような 1980〜1990年代のアニメが好きですね。

Hi and welcome to the first installment of my Pico Pico Culture Japan feature.
I’m Ian, an American currently living & working in Japan.
I’m 23 years old, and I’ve been in Japan for a little over a year now, currently working as a programmer for social games and other mobile applications.
My main hobby is an underground branch of Japanese electronic music mainly known as “nerdcore”; as a part of that I DJ and organize events from time to time.
Aside from that, I play video games, and watch anime now and then, mainly stuff from the 80s/90s like Dragon Ball and Urusei Yatsura.









そんな日本文化の影響を受けまくっている僕ですがそれと同時にアメリカ文化との面白い違いを感じています。
そのことについて考え、意外と知られていない違いを日本文化の影響を受けているアメリカ人「イアン」として色々とお話していきたいと思います。
それでは早速ですが今回の話題。みんな気になる「セックス」についてお話したいと思います。
セックスの中にも色々な話題がありますが今回はテーマを 3つ。それは「ポルノ」、「アダルトショップ」、そして「童貞」です。

As someone from America who’s also exposed to a fair bit of Japanese culture, a lot of interesting differences definitely stick out.
With that in mind, I figured it might be cool to write about some of the things I’ve noticed, and why not go for it in both languages? (That said, the Japanese has been revised by the editor.)
That’s essentially the gist of what this feature is going be about, so let’s jump right in to the first entry and take a look at everyone’s favorite subject: sex.
There’re a lot of different things to talk about within the topic of sex, so we’re going to split it up into three sections: porn, adult shops, and virginity.





まずはポルノです。
アメリカでいうポルノは日本いうところのアダルトビデオやエロゲなどのメディアを指します。
僕はこういったメディアについて特別詳しいという訳ではないのですがアメリカのポルノも日本のポルノも色々と試していますのでその違いについては説明していきましょう。
基本的にアメリカのポルノと日本のアダルトビデオではほとんどの場合で出演者や演出のテンションが違いますよね。
よくアメリカ人が日本のアダルトビデオを見て言うのは「彼女はなんで泣いているだい？」や「なぜこんなにつまらなそうな顔をしているの？」です。
最近はそんな事もないテンションの高いものも増えているような気もするけど、最初は僕自身もそういった感想を持ちました。
アメリガのポルノは卑猥な言葉を叫ぶように発したり、必要以上に大げさなアクションで演じたりし、常に盛り上がっている演出をして見ている人たちを興奮させようとしています。
逆に日本のアダルトビデオでは男優は声はおろか顔さえも写らず、全然活躍できていないですね。

So, the first thing we’ll take a look at is porn.
The word “porn” itself isn’t used all that much in Japan, instead terms like “adult video” and “eroge” (erotic games) are more common.
I’m not exactly a porn aficionado, but I’ve seen my fair share of both Japanese and western erotic media and noticed some interesting differences.
In general, the acting and presentation styles are pretty radically diverse.
It’s pretty common to see westerners having reactions like “Why is she crying?” or “Why doesn’t she seem like she’s enjoying it?” in reaction to Japanese pornography.
It does seem like productions breaking that stereotype have been getting more common recently, but the image persists.
Especially in comparison to Japanese adult videos, western porn in general has a much more vulgar, “raw” image associated with it.
Guys tend to have a much more active part, vocally and visually, in western porn, whereas a lot of the time in JAVs the male presence is a lot more subdued, often having their face blurred out.


あと日本のアダルトビデオにはモザイクがかかってますよね。陰部にはもちろん、たまに顔にもかかっています。
アメリカでも時々顔にモザイクがかかっていることがあるのですが性器にモザイクがかかっていることはありません。
日本におけるモザイクは法律（※）に基づいているらしいけど、そんな法律は無くしてしまったほうが良いとみんな思っているんですかね？

The other big thing about Japanese porn is the censorship, always of the genitals and sometimes the face too.
You hardly ever see anything like that in western porn, and definitely not censorship of genitalia.
The censorship in Japanese porn is an industry practice based on a law prohibiting the sale of obscene drawings, which sounds quite outdated but for whatever reason has persisted.

ぶっちゃけモザイクがあっても見ている人たちはすべての内容がわかっている訳ですし。
アメリカだとポルノを見るのは恥ずべき行為だと思われているのにモザイクがなく、日本ではそうでもないのにモザイクがあるというのは面白い現象です。
最近では海外の動画サイトなどでモザイクなしのものがアップされていて簡単に見ることができます。日本人はモザイクありとモザイクなしのどちらがスキなのかな？もちろん人それぞれ好き嫌いはあるだろうけど。

It seems like it can be generally agreed that anyone who’s watching pornography knows what’s going on regardless of censorship, so it feels like a wasted effort.
It’s definitely interesting that in America, where watching porn is generally seen as something to be embarrassed, about there’s no censorship; while in Japan, where it’s a lot less frowned upon, there is.
Plus, with the advent of the internet, access to uncensored media is extremely easy even in Japan.
Obviously people have individual tastes, but it’s interesting that the censorship-based industry is still thriving despite the easy availability of uncensored porn.





アメリカにおいてポルノを見ることは恥ずべき行為であると先ほど説明がそれ以上に恥ずかしい存在がアダルトショップです。
アメリカのアダルトショップは田舎者とか貧乏人が行く所という感じで田舎にしか無いんです。僕自身も悪い印象しかないので実はアメリカのアダルトショップには足を踏み入れたことはありません。
ニューヨークなどの大都市なら、もしかしてまともなお店があったりするのかもしれませんが、一般的なアダルトショップは汚く近づきたくもありません。
僕はどんな人でもポルノを見ること自体はいいことだと思うのですが、買いに行く事については何故か良い印象がありません。まともな人はアダルトショップには近寄らず、輩（やから）がたむろしている、そういった印象が原因なのかもしれません。

As mentioned before, watching porn in general is looked down on pretty bad in American culture, and adult video stores have an even worse image.
You see all the “adult video warehouse” billboards on the highway and get an image of overweight truckers in a shady building isolated from other businesses.
For pretty much those reasons I’ve never been into one of those places myself.
In bigger cities like New York and the like there’re certainly more dignified places to go to, but they’re the exception rather than the norm.
Even though pretty much everyone watches porn, going out to buy it gets you looked at as a pervert.


逆に日本のアダルトショップは明るい感じがしますね。お店に入るのにちょっと恥ずかしいけど、アメリカの様な否定的な感じが全然ありません。
店内には男性も女性もいて、みんな普通のお店で買い物するような軽い感じで商品を物色していますよね。アメリカだとアダルトショップは男性専用な感じで女性がいることなんてほとんどありえないです。
また、売っている商品も違いますね。アメリカにもディルドやバイブなど、あるにはあるのですが種類は少なめで日本の TENGA のようなのはお店ではあまり見かけません。その代わりダッチワイフの種類が多く、人気があるようです。
とは言ってもやはりアダルトグッズを持っている事には否定的ですね。日本では TENGA ぐらいなら持っていても普通に思われているように感じます。

In Japan, on the other hand, things are a bit different.
There’s likely still a bit of a stigma around adult shops, but they’re in general much more brightly-lit and inviting.
There’s a much greater feeling of a normal shopping experience, and less worry about getting looked down on.
While in America the average person wouldn’t expect to see women in a store selling porn, in Japan it’s fairly run-of-the-mill.
The goods being sold have a fairly different feeling to them too.
You can find stores that sell sex toys in America, sure, but with nowhere near the variety and ubiquity as stuff like what Tenga and similar brands sell.
America does have places like Spencer’s, but things like blow-up dolls also have a lot of social stigma and are seen as more of a joke to buy than anything, whereas in Japan it’s generally not seen as abnormal or looked down on to go out and buy Tenga eggs.





最後は童貞について。これはアメリカも日本もあまり違いがないようですね。基本的に童貞はどこにいってもお子ちゃま扱いを受けるので、みんな早く童貞を捨てたいと思っているのではないでしょうか？
今の若い子のことはちょっと分かりませんが、僕らの世代では初体験は何だか相当重い感じがつきまとっていますが日本ではどうですかね？最初は大事な人としたいという思いは日本も同じかな？二十代になってもまだ童貞だったら笑われたりするのでしょうか？日本で育っていないのでそこら辺の機微はまだ分かりません。
またセックスの前には色んな前戯があります。日本ではキス、ペッティング、セックスを「ABC」で表したりしますがアメリカでは野球の進塁に例えたりします。一塁はキス、二塁はペッティング、三塁はオーラル、本塁がセックスです。
ほとんどの場合、徐々に進塁するのが普通ですかね。日本ではどんな感じですかね。

In America and Japan both, there’re a lot of similar attitudes about virginity.
It’s pretty universal that if you’re a virgin some people will condescend to you, so a lot of people want to lose their virginity as soon as possible.
On top of that, in America people generally want their first time to be special, and with a special person; is there a similar sentiment in Japan? Are people in Japan laughed at if they’re a virgin well into their 20s? Not having spent most of my life here there’s still some subtleties like that that I haven’t picked up on.
In America we have the baseball metaphor for the step leading up to sex ? first base is kissing, second base is groping/petting, third is oral, and the home run.
In Japan there an A-B-C metaphor: A is kissing, B hand contact, and C is going all the way.
Usually in a relationship the bases are rounded slowly, is going from A to B to C the same?
