そろそろナードコア編が始まってから 1年間ほど経ちます。
たくさんのアーティストやグループを紹介してきましたが、まだまだ触れてもいないものがいくつもあります。
今回はナードコアとハードコアの境目に存在したテクノレーベルである、ハイパーリッチの話です！
境目と言いながら、ナードコアとの繋がりが深く、活動も幅広かったので間違いなく、ここで紹介すべきでしょうね。

It's hard to belive it's already been almost a year since I started writing about nerdcore for this column.
I've covered a lot of artists and groups, but there are still a fair few that haven't been touched on much yet.
This time, we'll take a look at a label that lies right on the border between nerdcore and hardcore: Hyper Rich!
While it is on the border, Hyper Rich has a lot of nerdcore connections, and an expansive catalog, so it's only fitting to cover them here.





ハイパーリッチは 1993年から活動しているテクノレーベルです。
成田光三郎よって「アバレテクノ」というコンセプトの元に活動を始めました。
ハイパーリッチの音楽は世界で一番と言ってもいいぐらいの大音量で、かなり強力なハードコアテクノとなっています。
とは言っても、ジャンルの枠が広く、ハードコアとともにヒップホップからトランスまで様々なジャンルのイベントに出演していました。

Hyper Rich is a techno label which was established in 1993.
It was formed by Kozaburo Narita with the concept of creating a label to release "violent techno".
Above all else, Hyper Rich's music is loud, some of the loudest of its time.
That being said, the label put out music in a number of genres and styles, with everything from hip-hop to trance appearing at one point or another.





1995年のこのコンピではすでにハイパーリッチの全体像が理解できます / This compilation from 1995 should give you a good idea of what to expect from Hyper Rich.




リリースはアナログと CD でのコンピレーションやアルバムとなります。
たまにフリーペーパーみたいなものが添付されていたりしていました。
また、成田光三郎ことソニックドラゴルゴはレーベルの主催者でほぼ全てのリリース物のプロデュースを行っています。
そして、一時期はメンバーなどを参加させたイベントなどもよく開催していました。

Releasing on both CD and vinyl, the label put out both compilation CDs and solo albums.
Some of the earlier releases also included mini zines and similar items.
As the label owner, Narita (mainly under the alias Sonic Dragolgo) acted as a producer for nearly all of Hyper Rich's output.
The label also held very frequent club events for a time.










以前より話はしていますが、私は日本に来る前からナードコアが好きだったのですが、アメリカにいる当時、ハイパーリッチのことを調べるようなことはありませんでした。
ただ、ハイパーリッチに関わっていたメンバーが参加しているコンピレーション CD などはいくつか持っていて、その中に「リターンオブザキラードリル」という CD がありました。
DATゾイドの曲などもお気に入りなのですが、その CD に入っている KOHEI120000 の「Monkey Radio」という曲が特に気に入っており、その KOHEI120000 こと Kohei Sakae（サカエ コーヘイ） もハイパーリッチ初期の co producer（プロデューサ補）的な立ち位置でした。
その後、来日して 3日たったある日、HONDALADY が出演していたイベントに遊びに行って、HONDALADY のファンの一人として、色々な方に挨拶をしていたのですが、その中の一人に Kohei Sakai もいて、初めての対面となりました。
ただ、その時はハイパーリッチではなく、「あの Monkey Radio のコーヘイさんですね！」と声を掛けさせてもらったのでビックリさせたかと思います。（笑）

I've mentioned before that I'd been familiar with nerdcore since before I came to Japan, but I actually wasn't too familiar with Hyper Rich in that period.
Regardless, I did own a few compilation CDs which featured frequent Hyper Rich collaborators, including リターンオブザキラードリル ("Return of the Killer Drill").
Along with the tracks from DATゾイド and others, I particularly liked the track "Monkey Radio" from KOHEI120000, or Kohei Sakae（サカエ コーヘイ）, who was a co-producer of some of Hyper Rich's early releases.
Upon first coming to Japan, on my first day in the country I went to an event HONDALADY was appearing at, and introduced myself to a few people there as a fan of HONDALADY - one of whom turned out to be that same Kohei Sakai.
I think he was more than a bit surprised when I responded to his introduction with "Oh yeah, you made Monkey Radio!", haha.









当時はまだハイパーリッチに詳しくはなかったのですが、色々と教えてもらいながら、少しずつ作品を入手していました。
今年の年明けには名古屋のメガミックスを訪れ、4枚ほどアナログを購入したら、アナログが全て揃ってしまいました。
メガミックスの実店舗は去年末で閉店してしまいましたが、店員さんが倉庫まで案内してくれ、購入させてくれたのは良い思い出です。
ハイパーリッチの中で個人的には DATゾイドの曲が一番好きですが、それ以外の曲も全部かっこいいですよー。

After that, I learned a little more about Hyper Rich, and slowly started to pick up up their various releases.
In fact, earlier this year, I was able to complete my Hyper Rich vinyl collection after getting a whole four releases on a visit to Nayoga's MEGA-MIX.
I didn't know it at the time, but the MEGA-MIX storefront actually closed late last year; they were kind enough to let me grab the items from their stockroom, though!
Personally, when it comes to Hyper Rich I'm partial to DATゾイド's tracks, but you really can't go wrong with any of it.





1993年 6月に「ナツコアッパークラスト」という名前でヒップホップ・テクノのライブ活動をしていた成田光三郎が、下北沢の屋根裏の店長にイベントを企画するように言われ、サンレコで対バンを募集してました。
それをきっかけに「命」や「MEDICINE CASE」、「EMD」などのテクノアーティストが集まり、1993年 11月に屋根裏にて「HYPER RICH PULSE Vol.1」というイベントが開催されました。
Vol.1 からではなかったようですが「アバレテクノ」のコンセプトである「国内最強超富暴電軍団」などの言葉を使うようになっていたようです。

In June of 1993, Kozaburo Narita, then performing hip-hop under the name "ナツコアッパークラスト" ("Natsuko Upper Crust"), was asked by the owner of Shimokitazawa club 屋根裏 to put together an event, and put an ad seeking collaborators in Sound & Recording Magazine.
After recruiting "命" (inochi, "life force"), "MEDICINE CASE, and "EMD", Hyper Rich was established and in November of 1993 "HYPER RICH PULSE Vol.1" was held.
While not quite established when the label first began, Hyper Rich was came to be centered around the concept of "violent techno", and referred to themselves as "the prince of Japanese techno musique".




1994年 4月にはハイパーリッチのリリース第一弾となった「国産第1号」が発売されました。
日本国内で CD プレス工場がいくつか出来始めた初期の時期、かなり早いタイミングでこの作品がプレスされたそうで、なんとこの作品の CD はそのプレス工場で初めてプレスされた商品だったという噂を聞いたことがあります。
内容としては、コンピレーション然という雰囲気を出していますが、ほとんどの曲がナツコアッパークラストの曲で、どちらかというとアルバムと言った感じです。
他に EMD、MEDICINE CASE、電卓（上述の Kohei Sakae）などのアーティストも参加していました。
また、ジャケットは電気グルーヴのパロディで、すでにこの頃にはナードコアの片鱗が垣間見えています。
同月にはリリース記念として「HYPER RICH PULSE Vol.3」が開催されています。

The label's first release, 国産第1号 (kokusan dai ichi gou, "First Domestic Product"), came in April of 1994.
Domestic CD pressing in Japan had only just begun at the time, and this was a very early domestically-pressed CD - in fact, I even heard at one point that it was the very first product from its particular pressing plant, hence the name.
While the CD refers to itself as a compilation, most of the tracks are by ナツコアッパークラスト, so it really functions as more of a solo album.
That said, it does also feature guest appearanced from EMD, MEDICINE CASE, and 電卓 (dentaku, an early alias of the above-mentioned Kohei Sakae).
The album's artwork is a pretty direct parody of Denki Groove's "Karateka", and in that sense there's already a bit of a nerdcore air to the label.
A release party for the CD, HYPER RICH PULSE Vol.3, was held the same month.





こんな曲もある意味でナードコア感がありますよね / I can't help but get some nerdcore vibes from a track called "TECHNOPOLIS BPM2000", too...




1994年から 1998年にかけては、かなり早いペースでイベントの開催とリリースを同時に行っています。
1995年 2月の HRC-002「デカメロン電設」から、2年間で 6枚のコンピレーションアナログを立て続けにリリースしています。
これら全てのリリースで、インパクトのあるタイトルやアートワーク（デザイン）で、当時それなりに好評を得ていたようです。
HRC-003「任天導師セガソニー」のデザインなんかは皆さんお馴染み（？）の NENDO でした。
上述の初期メンバーとともにニコニコ殺人団、DATゾイド、Neuron（EMD の別名義）、超能力学園Z、ジャックバドラなどがよく参加していました。
そして曲以外の特徴としては、ハイパーリッチのマスタリングは他に類を見ない音圧の高さで行われていました。

From 1994 to 1998, the label was both putting out releases and holding events at almost a breakneck pace.
The second physical Hyper Rich release was HRC-002 "デカメロン電設" (dekameron densetsu) in February of 1995, the first in a series of six compilation records released over the span of two years.
Without even getting into the music, each of these releases were quite unique and eye-catching, thanks to both the titles and the artwork and design.
The designs of HRC-003 任天導師セガソニー ("Ninten-doshi Sega Sony"; I have to admit that I don't actually understand this one) and others were handled by the popular Nendo Graphics.
In addition to the previously mentioned members, these compilations also heavily featured ニコニコ殺人団 (also known as Smily Slayers), DATゾイド, Neuron (another alias of EMD), 超能力学園Z (a band taking their name from the Japanese title of the 1982 teen comedy "Zapped!"), and ジャックバドラ (Jack Badra).
Aside from the songs themselves, something else Hyper Rich was well known for was its extreme mastering, employing abnormally high, extreme levels of volume.





上述では「任天導師セガソニー」を載せましたけど是非「拡張I/O暴動」も（他人がアップしたのです〜） I posted one full-release video already, but another can't hurt! (Someone else uploaded these.)




ハイパーリッチが開催したイベントのほとんどはインターネットが普及する前に開催されており、動画などは一切見つけられませんし、写真すらほとんどありません。
ただ私が聞いた範囲ですが、レーベルのメンバーやゲストなどのライブでは、リリースしている作品よりも更に激しい音、大きな音量で行われていたようです。
当時、配布されていたフリーペーパー「Digital Biscuit」には「HYPER RICH PULSE Vol.6」のライブレポートが掲載されていました。オンラインアーカイブにも登録されていますので是非読んでみて下さい。
たった数枚ではありますが当時の写真も見つけられましたので載せておきます。

Most of Hyper Rich's events were held before the internet was widely used, so there's not much record left of them - only a few photos, and no video whatsoever.
From what I've heard, they usually featured the label's main members performing live, with some of them getting even more aurally extreme than on the physical releases.
Digital Biscuit, a zine from the period Hyper Rich was active, featured the label a few times, including an event report for HYPER RICH PULSE Vol.6, which you can check out in their online archive!
I'll go ahead and include a few photos I did manage to find.



















第7弾の HRC-007 は元々「意志乃達級（いしのたっきゅう）」というタイトルでリリースされるはずだったのですが、クレームが入り「ダイナマイト青春」というタイトルに変更されています。
ただ、アナログ版も CD 版もリリースされているのですが、アナログ版については元々の「意志乃達級」で作られたものに、「ダイナマイト青春」のシールを貼ったものだったりします。
つまりそのシールを綺麗に剥がせば、かなりのレアモノになるのではないでしょうか・・・。

HRC-007 was originally intended to be titled "意志乃達級" - a made-up phrase with the same reading as Denki Groove member Takkyu Ishino's name. However, Ishino and Sony Music issued a complaint, and the title was changed to "ダイナマイト青春" ("Dynamite Youth").
However, it turns out that the vinyl release of the compilation is actually the original release with a second label sticker with the new title stuck over the original.
In other words, if you remove the "Dynamite Youth" sticker, you've got yourself quite the rare item...









1997年 9月にはソニックドラゴルゴという名前変更していた成田光三郎のファーストアルバム「のんびりポテトさん」がハイパーリッチから発売されました。
この時点でアナログでのリリースから、CD でのリリースへシフトしていきます。
また、2001年まではソニックドラゴルゴのソロ作品とコンピレーションを半分半分ぐらいで発売し続けていました。
あわせて、この頃から IQ300（日本國民の Tabemono の別名義）や Doly、覚醒機（後の m1dy になる）などもレギュラーメンバーになりました。
くわえて、この頃には「GROOVE」というクラブミュジック雑誌にハイパーリッチの関連記事がよく取り上げられていました。

In September of 1997, Narita's first album under the Sonic Dragolgo alias, のんびりポテトさん (nonbiri poteto-san, "Carefree Mr. Potato"), was released on Hyper Rich.
Beginning with this release, Hyper Rich shifted from vinyl releases to mainly CD releases.
From 1998 to 2001, the label's releases were split about half-and-half between compilations and Sonic Dragolgo solo works.
It was also during this period that IQ300 (who you might remember as Nihonkokumin's Tabemono), Doly, and 覚醒機 (Kakuseiki, better known as m1dy) became regular label participants.
Hyper Rich's work was also featured multiple times in club music magazine GROOVE around this time.




2000年頃より、ソニックドラゴルゴがヨーロッパでも人気においても評価を受けるようになります。
ドイツの Fuckparade のサポート CD に曲が収録されたり、フランスのハードコアレーベルからスプリットアナログまで出されていました。

In the early 2000s Sonic Dragolgo began to experience popularity in Europe as well.
In addition to contributing to a support CD for Berlin's Fuckparade, France's B.E.A.S.T Records also put out a split vinyl featuring Sonic Dragolgo.





確かに当時のヨーロッパではこの感じは受けそうです / I can certainly see this style going down well in Europe's hardcore scene at the time.




2001年の HRC-017「覇威涅拳 -Heine@Ken-」の発売後、一旦ハイパーリッチのリリース活動が休止されます。
この CD は海外でも結構流通されていたりしましたが、逆に日本国内では入手することが難しかったようです。
また、この当時よくソニックドラゴルゴとコラボしたりしていた beauty:beast・NEVEN の山下隆生も Kemonotsukai 名義で参加していました。
同時期に開催された HYPER RICH PULSE Vol.35をもって HYPER RICH PULSE は最終回となりました。これは以前シャープネルの回で紹介した killingscum の初ライブのイベントだったりします。

After the release of HRC-017 "覇威涅拳 -Heine@Ken-" in 2001, Hyper Rich went on an extended hiatus.
Heine@Ken was widely distributed outside of Japan, and in fact was apparently difficult to get ahold of inside the country.
An interesting thing to note is that Takao Yamashita of beauty:beast/NEVEN also participated in this release, under the name Kemonotsukai.
The CD's release party, HYPER RICH PULSE Vol.35, was also the final HYPER RICH PULSE event. You may remember this event as the debut of killingscum, mentioned way back in the entry on SHARPNELSOUND.









2001年に成田光三郎が海外に移住してしばらく、ハイパーリッチの活動はなくなりました。
ただ、2003年から 2005年にはサブレーベルの「Hyper Rich Yokohama」が、Doly 主催（？）で CD をリリースしています。
そして、2005年には一時期ハイパーリッチも復活し、ソニックドラゴルゴのソロ作品をコミケで 2回ほど出していました。
特に解散とかは発表されていませんが、それ以降はハイパーリッチの活動はなくなり、ソニックドラゴルゴもそんなに音楽活動をしていないようです。
しかし、何故か分かりませんが現在は YouTube においてタロット占い師として大人気らしいです！ナードコアじゃないですけど是非そちらも応援しましょう！

Hyper Rich's hiatus in 2001 was mainly due to Narita moving overseas.
However, from 2003 to 2005, Doly established the sublabel "Hyper Rich Yokohama", releasing a few CDs.
Hyper Rich itself also made a comeback in 2005, releasing a number of Sonic Dragolgo works at Comiket.
The revival was short-lived, however, and though there was never an official announcement of dissolution, Hyper Rich hasn't been active at all since.
That isn't to say Sonic Dragolgo has totally disappeared, though! He's actually doing quite well on YouTube with a tarot reading series, of all things. Not quite nerdcore, but it's more than worth a look!





今年の 6月にすごく久しぶりに日本でライブをやったらしいです / Actually, Sonic Dragolgo did perform in Japan for the first time in quite a while just this past June.





そして割と最近、ナードコア的な活動も行っています！ / And he's even posted a few things that are undeniably nerdcore!
