この前の1月にアメリカの実家に帰って、両親が飼い始めた犬と会いました。
子供の頃は3〜4回ぐらい猫を飼ってたけど犬を飼い始めたのは今回が初めてです。
私はどちらが好きかちょっと迷いますが犬好きの人と猫好きの人なんてのもありますよね。
アメリカと日本のペットではどう異なるか気になるので見比べてみましょう。
ということで今回のテーマは「ペット」で、「犬系」、「猫系」そして「その他のペット」に分けて話します！

When I visited my home in America this January, I got to meet the dog my parents got a few months ago.
When I was a kid we had three or four different cats, but this was my first time sharing a house with a dog.
I’m not really sure which I like more at this point, but "dog people” and "cat people” are definitely a thing!
There are a lot of differences between pets in America and Japan though, so let’s take a look at them.
You got it, the theme this time is "pets” - separated up into cats, dogs, and then other animals.





まずは犬の話をしましょう！
アメリカと日本はどう違うか考えると最初に思いつくのはペットの数の多さなんです。
犬についてだと、どちらかと言えばアメリカの方が多いと思います。
日本にも犬が沢山いるとは思いますがアメリカの場合はその数も種類も飼う目的も多種多様なんです。

Furst up (get it?) let’s talk about dogs!
In thinking about how America and Japan differ pet-wise, the first thing that comes to mind is level of presence.
And as far as dogs are concerned, they’re definitely more pervasive in the States.
A lot of people have dogs in Japan, too, but in the US there’s a lot more variance in breeds, reasons people get dogs, and how many dogs they have.


日本では犬を一匹で飼っている人が割りと多く、複数匹飼うのは割りと珍しいような気がします。
多分、数匹の犬を飼うスペースの余裕がある人があまりいないからではないでしょうか？
そしてアメリカでは犬の種類っていうか犬種が多いというのがあります。
小型犬から大型犬、短毛種から長毛種、大人しい犬から騒がしい犬などですね。
日本でも犬種はそれなりに違いますが、アメリカでは日本でまったく見かけない犬種が沢山いたりします。。

In Japan there are plenty of people who have one dog, but seeing someone with more than that is pretty uncommon.
The main reason for that is probably simply the fact that not many people have the space for more than one dog.
Also, in America there’s a wider variety of dog breeds for sure.
From small dogs to large dogs, shorthairs to longhairs, quiet dogs to loud dogs, there’s pretty much everything.
Obviously there are a number of various breeds common to Japan as well, but not nearly as vast as in the US.







あと、「飼う目的」も違いがあります。
一言で言えばアメリカでは番犬が割と一般なんです。
番犬は普通怪しい人を脅かすためなので大きくて怖そうな犬だったりします。
もちろん飼ってる人には優しいんだけど、知らない人に本気で疑ってかかってきます。
日本にはそういう犬ってほとんどいないんじゃないでしょうか？

As I mentioned, people in the States also have different reasons for owning dogs.
Essentially, in America it’s not unusual to have a dog as a "guard dog”.
Guard dogs are basically big scary dogs meant to discourage intruders.
Of course guard dogs are friendly with their owners, but they really don’t trust strangers at all.
Not very many people use dogs like that in Japan though, it seems.










猫は犬とは逆で日本では沢山飼われていて一般的な感じがします。
もうちょっと詳しく言うと日本では誰が猫を飼っても普通です。
ただアメリカだと核家族以外の人が猫を飼っていると少し普通じゃない感じになったります。
そしてさらに日本では猫を複数飼っても普通ですがアメリカだとかなり変な人だと思われるかもしれません。

Cats, unlike dogs, actually seem to be a bit more prevalent in Japan.
More specifically, in Japan it’s not really ever seen as strange to own a cat.
In America, it’s normal for a nuclear-style family to own a cat, but outside of that it can have a strange image.
On top of that, having multiple cats also isn’t unusual in Japan, but in America it definitely can be.


何故かと言うとアメリカにおいて一人暮らしの人が猫を飼うのは「寂しい人」というイメージがあったりします。
例えば、大学生とかの若い人が猫を飼うと「友達がいない人」だと思われる可能性があります。
そして猫を複数飼っているおばあさんなんかは頭が変な人で「crazy cat lady」なんて呼ばれたりします。
なんでそういうことになっているかはわかりませんが、本当に間違いのない話なんです。

Essentially what I’m getting at is, it seems sometimes in America living alone with a cat can make you be seen as lonely.
For example, single college students or young guys owning a cat might get thought of as such.
And of course there’s the stereotypical "crazy cat lady” - the old lady living alone with a hundred cats.
I can’t really think of why it’s a thing with cats but not with dogs, but it definitely is a thing.







そして日本には野良猫が多いですね。
アメリカの農場とかだと野良猫がたまにいますが、街中にはほとんどいません。
理由としては街で野良猫（犬も）が見つかったらすぐに「animal shelter」というところに連れて行かれます。
animal shelterは、街で拾ったりした捨て犬や野良猫を住まわせる場所でだれでもそれらの動物を里親として受け取れるんです。
ただ、長い間誰にももらわれないと安楽死されることもあります。ちょっと可哀想ですね。

Japan also has a lot of stray cats.
In America there’re stray cats on farms and the like, but not really in the city at all.
The main reason for that is that in America stray cats (and other animals) are taken to animal shelters.
Animal shelters are basically places where stray animals are taken to live until someone adopts them.
Sadly, though, if an animal goes unadopted for too long, sometimes they’re put to sleep. It makes you feel a little bad for the poor guys.







またアメリカでは猫に大変可哀想なことをさせることがあります。
この前、友達と話して驚かされたのですがアメリカでは猫の爪を取り除くことがあるそうです。
一度行えば元に戻せない手術だそうで、どう考えてもおかしなことですよね。
日本では全然考えられないですよね。

We do some other somewhat pitiable things to cats in America too.
It freaked my friend out when I told them about declawing cats.
It’s an irreversable surgical procedure, so it’s a pretty big deal.
It seems though, that it’s not a thing that’s done in Japan at all!





「ペット」だと思われている動物と言えば犬と猫だと思いますが、他の動物もペットにされていますよね。
一般的なのを考えると、日本にもアメリカにも小さい鳥や魚を飼うのは割と普通ですよね。
けどアメリカでは他にも一杯います。これらは日本だとあまり見かけないんじゃないかな？

Cats and dogs are obviously the two animals most commonly thought of as pets, but there are a lot of others too!
In both America and Japan, fish and birds are also relatively everyday animals to keep as pets.
But in America, we have some more outlandish animals we take care of too. You don’t see these in Japan every day.

I wonder what kind of uncommon pets people keep in Japan that would seem strange to Americans.






去年、LBTが出した動物コンピレーションで、ピコカルでも連載をしていたDJイオの曲です。
「Monkey Business」というタイトルで、猿をテーマにした曲です！まぁ猿はペットではないと思いますが本当にかっこい曲なので聞いてください。

Judging by the name "Monkey Business”, it sounds like it’s a monkey-themed track! I guess monkeys aren’t exactly pets, but it’s a great song so be sure to check it out.




ちなみに僕は今ペットを飼っていません。
飼える時間などほとんど無いんだからなんだけど、本当にいつか猫か犬を自分で飼いたいと思っています。

mostly because I don’t have the time to take care of one,
but I definitely do want to get a cat or dog at some point!
