最近は自分の同人音楽サークルでめちゃくちゃ忙しくなっています！
CDやTシャツの発送なども行っているので宅配便を使っているし、アメリカの宅配便サービスも日本の宅配便サービスも皆さんよりも少し詳しいと思います。
そんな毎週のように郵便局に行っている今日この頃なので、今度のテーマは「宅配便」にします！
宅配便の特徴を分けて、「宅配便会社」、「速さ」、そして「値段」について書きます。

Lately I’ve been pretty busy with my music label!
I’m always shipping out CDs, T-Shirts, and the like, so I’m pretty well-versed in the postal systems both here in Japan and back in the US.
I’ve been making trips to the post office pretty much weekly these days, so the theme shit tim around is going to be “the postal service”!
Specifically, we’ll be looking at three aspects of post: shipping companies, speed, and prices.










日本にもアメリカにも、宅配便サービスをやってる会社は一つだけじゃなく、色々ありますよね。
アメリカで一番メジャーな宅配便サービスは「USPS」（United States Postal Service）です。連邦政府がやっているものなんです。
日本でいうところの日本郵政（Japan Post Holdings）の子会社である日本郵便（Japan Post）でしょうか。日本郵便も株式会社ではありますが親会社の日本郵政が株式の100％を保有し、日本郵政の株式は国が100％保有しているので公社みたいなものですね。もちろん日本で一番のメジャーどころですね。
USPSと日本郵便の一番違う点はUSPSは銀行をやっていません。さらに、USPSは株式会社ではなく、公社です。

In Japan and America alike, there isn’t just one choice for your shipping service.
The biggest service in America is of course the government-run United States Postal Service (USPS).
The most comparable postal company in Japan would have to be Japan Post Holding’s child company Japan Post.
Japan Post itself is a corporation, but it is 100% owned by its parent company Japan Post Holdings, which is in turn 100% owned by the country of Japan, so in a sense it’s also a public company. It’s definitely the largest postal service in Japan.
The biggest difference between the two is that Japan Post also runs a bank, the Japan Post Bank. There’s also the fact that Japan Post itself is a privately held company.

USPS以外にも日本でいうところのクロネコヤマトとか佐川急便みたいな会社もあります。UPSとかFedExとかですね。
ただ、クロネコヤマトとか佐川急便は日本郵便と同じぐらいの頻度で使われている感じですが、アメリカだとUPSとかFedExとかは特別な場合いがいほとんど使われていません。
日本だとどの宅配便サービスをつかってもその内容はほとんど変わりませんが、FedExやUPSとUSPSは配送速度や利用料金が全然ちがうので同じようなサービスとも思われていない感じです。

Just like there are alternatives to USPS in America like FedEx and UPS, there are similar alternatives to Japan Post: Kuroneko Yamato and Sagawa Express.
That being said, Yamato and Sagawa are used in Japan almost with the same frequency as Japan Post, whereas FedEx and UPS aren’t used nearly as much as USPS.
For Japan, the services offered don’t vary all that much between shipping companies, but in America FedEx and UPS aren’t really seen as direct USPS alternatives.





日本は国内の配送だと、発送されたら1〜2日で配達されますよね。
日本はそんなに大きくないし、各会社のインフラも良くできているらしいです。
逆にアメリカのUSPSは、全然そんなものじゃないなんです。
国内の普通郵便は1〜2週間かかるなんてのはザラです。もちろんアメリカはものすごく広い国なのである程度はしかたないですがね。
ただ同一市内の配送でも3〜4日かかる場合があります。郵便物は山のようにあり分別するのがえらく大変だとのことです。
USPSの郵便システムはすごく複雑なことになっていて、ネットを使って問い合わせ番号で郵便物を確認したら州内の郵便物なのになぜか州外に行って戻ってくることもあったりします。

When sending mail within Japan, once an item has been shipped it usually only takes 1-2 days to arrive at its destination tops.
The country of Japan itself isn’t that big, and the shipping infrastructure is pretty well-established.
America is a fair bit different.
Domestic mail generally takes 1-2 weeks to arrive. Obviously a big part of the slower speed is how large the US is.
Still, even inter-city mail can take 3-4 days. There’s just so much mail being sent that the sorting workload is insane.
USPS’s shipping system is ridiculously complex; if you look at online tracking you’ll sometimes see things like in-state packages leaving the state and coming back before being delivered.







あと、日本だと日本郵便の「ゆうパック」とかヤマト運輸の「宅急便」とかを使うと配達日や時間の指定ができますけど、USPSそんなサービスは全くやっていません。
USPSの配達は1日1回。不在の場合に当日再配達は無しで翌日の再配達となります。
当日、郵便局で受け取ることも出来ますが必ず受け取れるかどうかはの保証はありません。
配達時間もUSPSの都合で決まるのでその日に荷物を受け取りたかったら1日中家にいるしかありません。
あと不在時にサインが不要な荷物の場合、そのまま玄関先に置いて行かれるのは良くあることです。
加えて日曜日は配達しません！
ただし、国際スピード郵便（EMS）は例外です。

In Japan with services like Japan Post’s Yuu-Pack or Yamato’s express mail, you can choose the day and time of delivery for your package, but USPS doesn’t offer anything like that.
USPS only delivers once a day, and if you miss a package you have to get it redelivered the next day. If you miss a package in Japan, it’s not too hard to schedule redelivery for the same day.
Sometimes you’ll be able to pick up a missed package from the post office in the states, but it’s not a sure thing at all.
You also have no control over USPS’s delivery schedule, so if you want to make sure you don’t miss a package you pretty much need the entire day free.
On the other hand, if the package doesn’t require a signature sometimes USPS will just leave it on your porch for you.
All of Japan’s mail services also deliver 7 days a week! Post offices are closed on Sunday, though.







早く届けたい場合や配達時間を指定したい場合、UPSやFedExを使うということになります。
まぁ、色々と配達条件を指定できますし、当日再配達もしてくれるのでアメリカ的には無茶苦茶特別なサービスだと思われていますね。
USPSは基本的に毎日各家庭に配達があるので忙しいんでしょうが、UPSやFedExは割りと配達の数が少ないので色々なサービスができるのでしょうね。
しかし、そんな特別サービスを使うにはお金がかかります。値段は大分違うものになります。

If you want your package to arrive faster or decide when it’ll be delivered, you have to use a service like UPS or FedEx.
Being able to set delivery options and the possibility of same-day redelivery are definitely seen as luxuries in the US.
USPS delivery has to stop at pretty much every house every day, but UPS and FedEx have less stops, so they’re able to offer different services.
Obviously though, those special services are going to put a pretty big dent in your wallet!





アメリカは広いので、国内の送料も色々と異なります。さらに配送速度によっても送料が異なります。
例えばUSPSでCDを1枚送るにも

2〜3週間：＄3
1週間：＄5ぐらい
3〜5日：＄8ぐらい

など色んな選択肢があります、その上、問い合わせ番号は別のサービスとなり、追加料金が必要となります。

Because America is so large, shipping prices vary even for domestic packages, and then vary again based on shipping speed.
If you want to mail one CD, you could pay anywhere from $3 to over $8, and be waiting from just a few days to multiple weeks.
Tracking and insurance can drive the cost up even more.


そして、アメリカから海外へ送る場合の送料は更に酷い事になっています。
アメリカから日本にCDを1枚送る場合、一番安いサービスでも＄10以上かかるんです。
しかも配達まで1〜2週間はかかります。
逆に日本からアメリカの場合だと1週間以内の配達でも300円以下ですのでアメリカは日本の3倍以上の送料がかかることになります。

International shipping with USPS has gotten to be pretty crazy.
Sending one CD from America to Japan, for example, costs somewhere around ten bucks, and takes 1-2 weeks.
Doing the opposite, one CD from Japan to America, costs less than 300 yen (around $3), and usually takes about one week.
In other words, USPS charges three times the price for a service that’s half as fast!


UPSやFedExの送料はUSPSより更に高いのですが特に急いでいる場合などに使ったりします。
USPSの2〜3倍の送料は覚悟しなくてはいけませんが配送の速さも2〜3倍になっています。
また別のサービスとなりますが週末配達とか翌朝配達なんかもできますがかなりの送料を覚悟しなくてはいけません。

UPS and FedEx are obviously more expensive than USPS, but they’re definitely faster as well.
You’re basically paying 2-3 times the price of USPS to get 2-3 times the speed.
You can also pay even more to get special services like early morning delivery or weekend delivery.


あと、アメリカの場合、荷物の重量によって送料もかなり上がっていきますが日本はそこまで上がらないようです。
イベントでCDを売りたい時など手持ちでは面倒だなと思っても日本だと送料がそんなにかからないので宅配便で送ってしまうこともあります。アメリカだと送料が高過ぎるのでまずありえません。

With American shipping services, the prices go up pretty fast as your package gets heaver, but it doesn’t seem to be nearly as bad here in Japan.
The idea of mailing CDs to an event to sell because carrying them is a hassle isn’t really a big deal here, but I wouldn’t even consider it back home.
